Lawrence Buttigieg is a practicing architect, artist, and freelance researcher who earned his PhD from Loughborough University in 2014. Widely recognised for his exploration of the female form, Lawrence has produced a significant body of work spanning portraits and landscapes that capture the distinct luminosity of Malta and Gozo.  This work can be seen on a companion website here https://aboutlawrence.com/.

This website seeks to present a deeper exploration of the artist's practice-led research and focuses on his academic work and recent body-themed box-assemblages These examine concepts of alterity, femininity, and sacrality by challenging traditional male subjectivity in Western art.

Lawrence meticulously constructs these sculptural artefacts from American walnut, combining traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary art. Such architectural boxes encapsulate complex arrangements of organic relics, second-class relics, and found objects. Two of these were recently featured in the exhibition DESIRE & ITS EXCESS, where the structures framed profound narratives of identity and human longing.
